Little Balkans Days Festival

September 2

Held Labor Day weekend since 1984, the festival pays homage to the region’s diverse immigrant heritage and blends family entertainment, arts, crafts, food and music.

Why “Little Balkans”?

Southeast Kansas was known for making trouble, such as European immigrants continuing traditions of wine-making despite being in a state where alcohol was prohibited from 1881-1948, and women protesting during a coal mining strike, and getting arrested and national attention for it. Civil disputes led a governor to call the region “Little Balkans”. Meant to be derogatory and to alienate these people from the rest of the state, in time the moniker provided people with varied backgrounds but shared values an identity and was embraced. Learn about the area’s bootlegging, coal mining and immigrant heritage at Crawford County Historical Museum, Girard History Museum, Miners Hall Museum, and the Downtown Pittsburg Walking Tour.
